Who is the Challenge for?

The Thinking Challenge is open to pupils in Years 4–6 and Years 7–8. Schools may enter individual pupils, classes or whole year groups.


How long does the Challenge take?

The test takes around 30 minutes and is designed to fit comfortably within a normal lesson or enrichment slot.


When does the Challenge take place?

The Challenge runs during a set window:
Monday 2nd March – Friday 13th March.

Schools may choose any day and time within this window that works best for them.


How is the Challenge delivered?

The Challenge is completed online, under teacher supervision, using school devices. Pupils will be provided with a secure link to access the test.


What do pupils need on the day?

Pupils will need:

1 - Pen and paper

2 - No calculators

They will be asked to select their school, enter their year group, first and last name and then complete the test independently.


Does the Challenge support access arrangements?

Yes. Schools may apply their normal access arrangements, including extra time, rest breaks, movement breaks and readers. These can be managed by the supervising teacher on the day.


Is the Challenge based on the school curriculum?

No. The Challenge does not rely on specific syllabus content. It focuses on general knowledge, reasoning and problem-solving skills, making it accessible to pupils from different school settings.


How much does it cost?

The cost is £2.50 per pupil. Schools will be invoiced in advance of the Challenge window and pupil numbers can be adjusted if needed.


What recognition do pupils receive?

All pupils who take part receive a certificate of participation. There is no ranking of schools, but national recognition is given to the highest scoring pupils.


When will results be available?

Results and certificates will be issued and published on Monday 23rd March.


Who writes the Challenge?

The Thinking Challenge is written by an experienced UK prep school teacher and ISEB assessment writer, with a focus on producing age-appropriate, accessible and genuinely thought provoking questions that schools can trust.
